The punishment for being an unlicensed driver varies by state but typically includes a fine at least but also can include jail time and a delay of you actually being able to get your license. For example, the penalty in California for driving without a license usually includes not only a fine and court fees but the towing and impoundment of the vehicle the unlicensed driver was oprating. If you have had a prior conviction for driving as an unlicensed motorist in California, the state may be able to take the vehicle away from you as forfeiture. There are other laws as well for driving an un-insured vehicle, your best bet is to try to find low cost insurance and be an honorable driver.
